Emmett
Hatch’s Life and Accomplishments
This
scholarship was founded to honor the memory, spirit and accomplishments of
Emmett Hatch. Emmett was born in Louisville, Kentucky and received his initial
advanced education at a local college. In 1950 he received a bachelor's degree
from Municipal College and soon there after enlisted in the Unites States
Air Force. He completed Air Force pilots training in 1952, helicopter pilots
training in 1957. In addition to these accomplishments, while still in the
Air Force, he obtained a bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from Washington
State University-Air Force Institute of Technology. During the Vietnam War,
he flew as command pilot for the Air Force Expansion and Commitments Air Rescue
Service to recover downed aircrew members. After 23 years Emmett retired from
the Air Force. Over the next 10 years, he subsequently worked as a Systems
Engineer for Lockheed Martin and NASA Ames Research Center in Sunnyvale, California.
After his retirement, he later received an Associate of Arts degree from the
College of Alameda where he eventually taught both Pilot and Maintenance courses.
Purpose
Each year
the Bay Area Black Pilots Association will award a local pilot in training.
The purpose of the scholarship is to provide funds to be used to assist a
pilot in training in obtaining a private pilot license or an advanced rating
(i.e. Instrument rating).
Eligibility
• Possesses
a current Class III FAA Medical Certificate.
• Applicant should be planning a career in any area of aviation, including
commercial pilot, flight training and education.
• The applicant must be at least 17 years old.
• The applicant must reside in the Bay Area and be receiving flight
training at a local flight school.
• The applicant may be a member of the Bay Area Black Pilots Association,
but it is not required.
• Previous Bay Area Black Pilots Association scholarship recipients
are not eligible.
• The applicant must be African American.
Application
Guidelines
• The
application must be completed in full, using this form. Do not submit your
own computer-generated form or change the format.
• Applicant must meet eligibility requirements. Verification of eligibility
will be made by the BABPA Scholarship committee.
• All applications must be postmarked by March 1st, 2008.

• A selection committee made up of three members of BABPA will review
the scholarship applications. Judging criteria will include:
1. Aviation activities as described in a personal essay and by recommendations.
2. Ability to meet planned goals, as shown by recommendations, academic and
professional records.
3. Commitment to the field of aviation as described in the personal essay
and recommendations.
4. Demonstrated financial need.
5. Bay Area Black Pilots Association Scholarship committee will notify the
winning candidate and all the candidates who did not qualify by sping 2008.
Scholarship
Award
• The
amount of the scholarship is $5,000 and must be used within one year of the
date the scholarship is issued.
• The scholarship funds may be applied to academic tuition, to fees
for technical schools or to flight training.
• Funds will be paid from receipts, which document the training. Receipts
must be signed by both the student and instructor and include copies of the
logbook if applicable.
• Scholarship funds should only be applied to one rating or certificate.
• In addition, the recipient will receive one-year membership in the
Bay Area Black Pilots Association
• Recipients are required to report the progress of flight training
at BABPA’s monthly meeting.
